30 April, 2010

Another chilly April day. We spent some more time at my grandparents' house, where I snapped this shot.

Today was a busy day. Outside of the norm, my mom and sister went grocery shopping, I hastily threw together a bit of writing (last minute cramming), my contact juggling ball arrived and I got a visit from my third grade teacher. I could not capture the essence of a busy day with a camera, I'm afraid. However, my new contact juggling ball was quite easy to photograph.

Some of my writing and the tip of my pencil viewed through my acrylic ball:

My mom's beautiful rottweiler; the mother of my dog. She literally showed up on our doorstep one day and, try as we might, we never could find her previous owners. And thus, we took her on as our own. Five and a half years later, she's given us plenty of love, lots of laughs and a litter of beautiful pups. I'd say she has been rather successful.

Spent some of our day at our grandparents' house. We played catch in various forms in their large backyard. Unfortunately, the games were abruptly ended when I unintentionally tried to catch the baseball with my upper lip, which resulted in much blood. However, I did manage to get this shot of my grandparents' awesome cuckoo clock before we headed outside.

One of the unfortunate things about digital cameras is that they have to be focused through their screen. If you've used a digital camera, you know that light has the reputation of reflecting off of the screen, thus rendering the photographer blind. I took two pictures of my subject today; one was off center, and this one has a less than ideal background. And so, my potentially awesome shot is now less than satisfactory. But I s'pose it could be worse.

One of our neighborhood bunnies! Last year, they arrived in full force. It didn't take them long to invade our neighborhood; and their numbers haven't dwindled since.

One thing photographers hate is being photographed. Unfortunately, that makes my avid photographer of a sister something of a target in my mind. I've gotten a few cute pictures of her exercising her photographic eye, but this is the first opportunity I've had to post a picture on my blog.

Here, she was shooting one of her daily pictures of her faithful sidekick, Jared. She generally takes several shots, so I don't know if that particular photo will make it onto her blog.

Ah, Colorado. It constantly amuses me. Yesterday, I awoke to a rain soaked ground; today, it was snow covered (and this was a wet, heavy covering, too. Took some serious muscle to lift and throw it from the deck.).

The rain sang me to sleep last night and still lingered on the ground when I woke up this morning.

This is the arm of one of our chairs, still soaked from the precipitation of last night. As it's on the west side of our house, it is protected from the rising sun.

This little birdy buffet is my family's responsibility while my grandparents are out of town. I refilled the feeders this afternoon.

With green grass comes green weeds. This here is the most mature dandelion flower in our yard.

Bonus photo:
A large clump of cottonwood seeds that drifted into our yard this afternoon. Boom held it for me so that it didn't drift off while I was trying to photograph it.

I saw my first blue jay of the year this morning. The grass is nice and green. The trees are budding. All of nature seems to believe that spring is here. Spring? In April? Here in Colorado? Naw... Can't be.

(A shoot of the neighbor's budding tree peeking between two of our fence slats. Another experiment with shadowing.)

I am convinced that Culver's is the best hamburger joint in town. Love this restaurant!

Our final day of painting. We are greatly looking forward to having our normal lives back.

We got a shiny new door today. It replaced the previous door (leading from the backyard to the garage), which was nearly paper thin. This one ought to provide a bit more security.

The word today was that tomorrow's the last day of the painting. We'll be undergoing more renovations in the near future. A break will certainly be nice, though.

As I've spent the past week obsessing over Doctor Who and watching episode after episode on the computer, I decided it was time I finally vacuumed the tower out. I didn't regret it, as I got a fair bit of dust out of it. It looked much better by the time I was finished and will run cooler, too, I hope.

This is a photograph of the computer monitor and my TARDIS. The latter was crocheted for me by LH before I even watched a Doctor Who episode. I loved it then and love it even more now. :D

Dropped by our grandparents' today. I saw this sign in the basement, on my grandpa's desk. I've never paused to look at it before now.

(I am determined to make myself a handsome background and place this phrase on it, 'cos it's just that awesome.)

Having a plastic film tacked over your windows (and doors) all day assists with building an excellent appreciation of electricity. The light pink on the garage door demonstrates the original color of our house; the peach is the new color. Supposedly, the trim is going to be painted white. Can't wait to see the finished results!

I begin to understand the usefulness of a universal remote. Admittedly, when I'm at home, using my own remotes, I have no problem knowing which control belongs to which appliance. However, I had to operate my grandparents' TV and DVD player today and had to recall the directions my grandfather gave me a week ago. Fortunately, I discovered that all of the knowledge -both minuscule and crucial- that I have obtained since Easter did not drive this particular bit of know-how out of my brain.

I received this notebook in a package from a friend yesterday. It's positively gorgeous (the designs are actually silver, they just appear white in this picture) and looks very durable. I adore it. :D

Our landlord is having our house painted. We've had to move all of our cars, outdoor furniture, etc. away from the house to prevent their accidental exposure to the paint. So our deck and driveway are quite empty.

As such, it was easy for me to find plenty of space to photograph our Sherlock Holmes DVD, which came in the mail yesterday! We watched it last night and I was thrilled to discover that, after reading almost all of the Sherlock stories, I still appreciate the movie. Possibly even more, after catching direct quotes from the books and short stories in the script.

For the first time in over a year, I changed the horses on this shelf out. I've been attempting to remove the large quantity of dust and dog hair from my bedroom for the past couple of days - this was part of that effort.

(The photo -not the shelf- is crooked.)

This is a particularly small duckling. The quarter will help you judge just how teensy it is. Cute, right?

5 April, 2010

This is probably one of the strangest photos I've ever taken. And, honestly, I can't even claim it as an idea, per se. I was sitting on my bed, thinking and absentmindedly playing with my camera. This is a frequent occurrence that often results in random photos that are generally deleted seconds after their birth. As it is, I found this photo somewhat attractive in a weird Alice-in-Wonderland-way. On my camera, you can still see faint outlines of the area around the blinds, but the picture darkened up when loaded on my computer, for some reason.

So, like I said, weird picture, but kinda intriguing.

4 April, 2010 - Easter

We accompanied my grandparents to Olive Garden for our Easter dinner this year. Our large party of seven was placed in a little alcove and assigned a most entertaining waiter. I decided to give my camera's sepia setting another try and was pleased that it worked splendidly indoors.

Hopefully you can tell what this is without explanation... But in the case that you can't, this is a doggy paw print. I spent some of my afternoon outdoors playing with and training my dog and encountered this beauty solidly engraved in our yard. I can't say for sure when this impression was left or which of our three rotts put it there, but was amazed at how well preserved it was.

The first part of the day was absolutely gorgeous, with clear blue skies and fluffy white clouds! Made for a fabulous photography opportunity.

(It looks surreal, doesn't it?)
