30 November, 2011

As we headed out to the gym, I resolved to take another photo in the 16:9 aspect ratio and decided to throw in a goal to get said photo in black and white. Having a self-established challenge helped me find a photo for the day, for sure.

(Per tradition, here's a copy in a larger size.)

29 November, 2011

Took a trip to the local duck pond that we last visited back in March. This time there were indeed more ducks than geese, since most of the latter had already migrated. I brought both my mother's camera and my own, since they both have attributes that make them quite valuable.

My absolute favorite of the bunch.

A handsome mallard in the setting sun. He waddled onto the shore for a brief while before diving back into the water.

One of many handsome couples.

This final one is the only one from my camera. It handles direct sunlight far better than the Nikon.

28 November, 2011

Today, our pups turned four years old. I know, hardly puppies any more, but that's how we still think of them. Naturally, I felt it necessary to take my girl outside and get some birthday photos of her. I was intending to get some shots of Joy, too, but didn't wind up doing that. I should try another photo shoot with her again soon, though.

I never tire of pretty pictures of my girl, but I'm sure you all are a wee bit weary of my more typical posed shots, so I'm only sharing one of those with you all today. The other three shots are some more unique takes on photographing a subject that's been in front of my lens many a time.

I finally captured the bow! It took a bit of work and several blurry photos, but here it is. I trained this one over three years ago and though we have a few photos of me and her performing the trick together, I've wanted a shot without me, taken by me, for a little while now.

Demonstrating her "step up" trick. Though I feel this could have been framed better, I was having to do some fast shooting since the dog was very much excited (as indicated by her "smile"). I find the big head effect amusing, though.

My girl's paws. Definitely not the feet of a puppy. She held her step up very nicely, though, as I snapped this and several other shots.

27 November, 2011 - LH's birthday

We were thrilled to have LH for her birthday this year! My mom fixed her delicious manacotti for dinner and we had a tasty birthday cake for dessert. It was a rather enjoyable day, I thought.

LH's mom got her the below chocolates for her birthday; I thought the foil looked rather fun to photograph, so I got a few shots of 'em. The below picture was my favorite of the bunch.

I also got to photograph LH herself, which was quite a pleasure. She's an entertaining subject, which turned out some quirky and cute photos. Hopefully I'll get the honor of being her photographer again in the future.

Two of my favorite pictures, though enough of the photos turned out well enough that picking these two was a bit of a debate.

26 November, 2011

LH and I spent a good portion of the afternoon on our computers; me working on file transfers and her on homework. As such, I did what I tend to do when I don't have time or inspiration for anything else--photograph the dogs.

I'm thinking of this shot as "The Stare Down." I tried to get even closer to this scene, but the pups zoomed away before I could.

Cropped this one into a square to cut out a bunch of white noise while keeping the full dogs.

25 November, 2011

I took a ride with LH back to the printer that she hired to print her business cards. Unfortunately, the shop was closed (presumably for Black Friday, but we don't know, as they didn't have a sign explaining their closure) so the cards had to wait. However, I snapped a few shots of scenery surrounding the store to fulfill my picture for the day.

I was actually attempting to capture more of the traffic in this shot, but couldn't seem to catch more than one car at a time.

24 November, 2011 - Thanksgiving Day

This is another one of those times where I frantically catch up on several days in one evening. Please bear with me.

I didn't have many photo opportunities on Thanksgiving, so I grabbed the wobble flower LH gave me last month and finally got a photo of it. It's adorable. And wobbles. And is a sunflower. It's just awesome, in general.

23 November, 2011

Another dog post. I finally managed to capture a good shot of Joy-Ful's front end, though (second shot), which I consider something of a victory. I don't know what her obsession is with keeping her rear to the camera, but the majority of my photographs have her best end facing away from me.

22 November, 2011 - CB's Birthday!

Happy birthday to my sister, CoolBreeze!

This being her birthday, I decided to make a subject out of one her masks for my daily shot. I actually had a lot of fun working with this color combination, illuminated by a sliver of sunlight. (Seriously, the sun is setting ridiculously early. It's madness.)

The shots below were my favorite from the shoot, though the top is definitely my preferred of the two.

21 November, 2011

I keep forgetting that the sun is setting earlier than it has been for the past several months and thus, keep failing to get photos until the sun is too far gone. Grr. Anyhow, this is one of those "I'm desperate because I need a photo, but have no inspiration" shots. Good times.

20 November, 2011

My original intent being to photograph the dog our neighbor is pet sitting as he was peeking at me through the fence, I decided to shoot in the 16:9 aspect ratio. He wandered away from the fence before I could get a shot, though, and failed to wander back. Thus, I wound up photographing the mums again. I'm amazed that they're still alive and looking good.

Even though this shot is fairly clear in the dimensions that fit my blog, I decided to keep with tradition and give y'all a larger size to view it in, should you so choose.

19 November, 2011

Whilst I was watching the pups as they played this afternoon, I noticed that the sun was at a near perfect angle for doing a shadow study.

I recently did a graphic for a friend that involved manufacturing the shadow of a horse. This was not an easy task. It actually left me twitching a bit. However, it did bring my attention to the fact that, though I have often photographed shadows in a creative manner, I've not done an actual study of the way they fall based on different lighting, angles, etc.

Here are a couple results of the study.

18 November, 2011

We got to the gym ridiculously late today, so it was dark by the time we left. Meaning I got to see the lights they have along their pathway all lit up. Why yes, this was another of those instances where everyone that passed me by gave me a look that suggested I was from space as I sat around, photographing a lamp. I do love those moments.

Preeeeetty.

And, just for the fun of it, an awesome bumper sticker that I saw as I was going into the gym. I dedicate this shot to my fellow rockers.

17 November, 2011

Kitchen cleaning day. It took me a bit to figure out what I was gonna photograph for the day, but since I haven't photographed my computer in a while, I decided to take it out onto the deck (where there was some decent lighting) and snap a few shots of the "qwerty" portion of the keyboard.

16 November, 2011

We didn't actually get out of the house for our typical Tuesday errands, so I had to again utilize the scenery in my own backyard. I've noticed the shadows cast by the tall grass that's growing right next to the fence a few times and wanted to photograph them, but just finally got around to it on the sixteenth. Unfortunately, by the time I'd convinced my camera's focus to obey, the light had already moved beyond the "pretty" grass, so I had to use a smaller specimen. Not quite as photogenic, but it captured the concept, at least.

(I feel the details are easier to view when the photo's in a larger size.)

Some dead, dried leaves on our rosebush and, just under those, some new green shoots. Hopefully this means the late transplant (brought about by our landlord's crazy project) didn't completely kill the bush.
(Just for kicks and giggles--larger size.)

15 November, 2011

This is another one of those times where I open with an apology to those on slow internet connections. I've got six photos for you today, which is merely because I was home all day with little to do and pretty subjects. It's a recipe for picture overload, really.

Today's photos were actually taken in three rounds, so I'll divide them thus.

This first shot was taken with my mom's camera during a pause in the action. Wisdom decided to flop down at the top of the stairs and look utterly adorable, so I subjected her to some more photography.

These next three shots were taken using the sports continuous setting on my mom's camera. I was a little baffled at the results, since they all turned out rather blue and super sharp. The sharpness, I assume, is compensation for the high-action that the creators knew you'd be shooting. I liked the setting, but because I had to go crazy with the editing to get the photos to look even this good, I can't say I'll be using it very often.

A rare solo shot of Joy-Ful. Yes, I took this with the sports setting. I didn't have time to switch to another.

These final two photos were taken in the late afternoon by the light of the setting sun. I managed to find a couple slivers of remaining light to capture my pretty girl.

14 November, 2011

I know that Boom has posted a photo of this particular outlet cover on her blog, but I've been wanting to put my own creative spin on this subject for a little while now, so at risk of being redundant, here it is.

Mirror outlet cover shot plus camera self portrait. This photo can multitask.

13 November, 2011

More playing pictures. I managed to get clearer shots this time than even on Wednesday. I also experimented with black and white a bit. Some day, I'll get this high-action stuff down.

My dog's a goon--she likes to roll about in the dirt and wrestle with her sister from her back. I have to dust her off when the play session's over every time.

12 November, 2011

I accompanied LH to visit one of her college friends for the afternoon. We had a good time playing video games and snuggling their critters. This little chihuahua mix--appropriately named Teenie--spent a good portion of the time in my lap.

Though the lighting was low and the dog rather squirmy, I did manage to get a couple clear shots of her. She was a silly little thing.

11 November, 2011

LH and I dropped back by one of the print shops we visited the previous week to put in an order. The shop had an adorable vintage Pepsi machine that drew my attention.

I feel that the sepia on my camera is overly orange, which tends to bug me. So this time, I put the photo on GIMP and played around with the color to get a slightly more accurate sepia.

10 November, 2011

This little fellow hopped out in front of me as I was gathering the tools for cleaning the yard. Being one of the most cooperative grasshoppers I've encountered, he stood about for a good ten minutes while I photographed him from multiple angles.

9 November, 2011

I'm still on a quest to get a nice, clear photo of the girls while they're playing. I got a bit closer with a couple of my shots today, but I'm still not quite satisfied, so I'll just keep working at it.

Below are the two best shots I managed to get today; you can actually see the dogs in these and not just a pair of vaguely dog-shaped blurs. I find it interesting that in the first, Wis is the one in focus and Joy is the clear one in the second.

8 November, 2011

I decided to make the eighth my square photograph day for November. So now I only have December and I'll have met my goal! Here's to hoping next month isn't so crazy that I forget to pull out my square viewfinder.

We dropped by a new-ish boot store that we've been interested in checking out. As we no longer have horses, we don't really have a use for cowboy boots, but it was nice looking.

I discovered fairly quickly that boots are really more of a rectangular frame sort of subject, but with a bit of experimentation, I managed to find an angle that looked rather good in square form.

This shot is another one of them "bonus photos." I was actually snapping a shot of the tag on a pair of boots that I tried on and rather liked--in case I wanted the information in the future--and discovered that the photo actually looked rather artistic. The contrast, angle, and focus are all rather nice, I think.

7 November, 2011

Finally got back to the gym today and after that, went on a trip to Wal-Mart, as they're forecasting another nasty storm for tomorrow. As such, I didn't have any photographic opportunities until I got home and by then the light was nearly gone. I did manage to snap a shot of the conglomeration of leaves in our yard, though. We only have the one little maple, but the surrounding yards have a wide assortment of trees; some evergreen needles even managed to sneak into my frame in this one.

6 November, 2011

Couldn't resist pausing before heading into church to capture this scene. I love our mountains.

As with all the other photos of the 16:9 aspect ratio, this is better viewed in a larger size.

5 November, 2011

Seeking a Saturday activity, LH and I took off on a random drive that resulted in a visit to a strip mall. Not our typical hang out, but I think that's part of what drew us there. 'Sides, neither of us had any money to spend, so there was no temptation to take our visit beyond window shopping. Good thing, too, as I would have come home with an eighteen dollar mask otherwise.

Though my sisters have many masks thanks to our slight mask obsession, I don't actually have one myself. This is mostly because I haven't found one I liked just yet, though the fact that I have nothing to do with one except display it does help. This one, though, fit me wonderfully and was of a style that I positively adored. The Venetian design caught my eye from the off, so I immediately proceeded to snap some shots to remember the mask by.

This was a random, tall plant growing in one of the mall's planters. 'Twas about ten feet tall and very fuzzy. This particular stalk had fallen over, giving me an opportunity to touch the plant and take a photo.
