30 September, 2011

Believe it or not, most of my day was spent sorting through all the photos from the previous day's trip.

I did manage to get a daily photo, however, of a portion of the new front fence. You can see a bit of the new landscaping in the background.

29 September, 2011

We took a trip with my grandparents over the mountains to view and photograph the pretty, yellow aspens. Our last voyage up there was in 2009, before I had my camera, so this was my first chance at capturing the views.

Our first stop of the day. I'm a sucker for a landscape accented by a few grazing horses. (Best viewed in a larger size.)

Lots of couples had carved their names into the aspens near the road. (Larger size)

An abundance of fall beauty. (Larger size)

A lone aspen amidst some rocks. (Larger size)

Not sure why some of the aspens had a smattering of red leaves, though my speculation is chemicals in the soil. Whatever the case, it made for nice accenting. (Larger size)

A pair of mule deer fawns. (Larger size)

Random weeds. I thought they were pretty. (Larger size)

Lacking inspiration, I decided to give a popular photography venture a shot.

27 September, 2011

Make a photo without composing by looking through the viewfinder: over your head, from the hip, on the ground, etc.

I took this photo while we were having Sonic for lunch. It was actually rather convenient to be unable to use the viewfinder, since I wasn't too keen on getting down on the pavement to get the shot.

While the above picture is my official daily photo, I got too many good photos later in the day during our random drive in the mountains to stop there. So here is a continuation on my daily post.

Colorado mountain roads are gorgeous all the time, but especially so during fall.

Seriously, Colorado is awesome.

If you don't live here already, I bet you're currently contemplating a move.

This really neat root had crept out of the ground over a rock, and then burrowed back into the dirt. In fact, it was part of a tree that had crushed rocks between roots. The sheer power of plants amazes me.

26 September, 2011

Make a self-portrait, with or without the camera in the frame.

My original plan was to do a shoot of me and my dog that I've been wanting to do for some time now. Alas, Wis got in another spat with the the neighboring dog right before the shoot, so she was hopped up on adrenaline the entire time I was attempting to get some good photos of the two of us. I promptly gave up on that idea and proceeded to think up another idea. Though I probably looked like a mad woman as I rushed from the camera to the other end of the deck, I had a good time and think the results were worthwhile.

25 September, 2011

Make an interesting photograph of something mundane and ordinary today.

LH and I hung out at Panera for a few hours, where I victimized one of their lamps. I actually really liked how all of the shots turned out.

24 September, 2011

Another one of our doggies went to heaven. She-Luv, our beautiful Rottweiler and the mother of my Wisdom girl, took a nasty turn on the evening of the 23rd and had to be put to sleep the following morning. We laid her to rest by her son, Sark, and our recently departed Dosser.

As such, I had a hard time finding inspiration for my September 24th shot. I'm glad I had the Daily Shoot assignment to provide a prompt.

Make a photograph today with a central point of interest in it.

A rather poor quality shot of a toy dump truck at the day care at the edge of our neighborhood.

23 September, 2011

Lose the rectangle today. Make a photograph with a square (1:1) aspect ratio and post it. Crop if needed.

So I've managed to do this assignment once a month for three months now and I'm still enjoying it. Perhaps I'll be able to squeeze it into the last three months of the year, also?

I couldn't decide on just one of these shots. So y'all get three today. I hope they can make up for the uninspired shots of the three previous days.

Happy Fall!

22 September, 2011

Construction seems to be perpetual: streets, sidewalks, buildings. Make a photo of something under construction today.

On Tuesday, our landlord tore our yard out to prepare for a landscaping project. What was left of our sunflowers went with the rest of the yard, so sunflower Thursday is now a thing of the past. Our yard is currently dirt, edging, and paving stones. Despite his anti-anything-that-requires-water mindset, he was kind enough to give us a flower box in front of our window. We shall see what we can get to grow in that space next year.

21 September, 2011

Bright, vivid colors can draw attention and add "pop" to a photo. Make a photo that has vivid colors today.

Some wooden roses that Boom got for my mother last Mother's Day. They have adorned our piano ever since.

20 September, 2011

Make a photograph that illustrates the idea of connection.

Another day when all of my creativity was dead and gone. This was the best I could manage.

19 September, 2011

I'm in love. Head over heels love.

...with the zoom on my mother's camera. I spotted this kitty on my neighbor's deck and my camera's zoom was not up to the task, so I decided to run inside and grab my mother's camera. Somehow, despite being fully zoomed, the camera still got crystal clear photos. Me thinks it's time for me to upgrade my equipment.

I got a good quantity of photos, but this was my favorite. Yes, it is another black and white. I've produced a lots of those in the past few days.

18 September, 2011

Birthday celebrations continue.

We went to church in the morning and then went to our favorite pizza place with my grandparents. Since LH had already been invited to join us earlier that week, she was a welcomed addition to the group. While waiting for my grandparents to arrive, we sat around and played with our cameras a bit. The below photos were some of the results of my photography.

(I think this photo looks better in a larger size, since it's kinda busy when crammed into such few pixels.)

(Both of these shots are of LH's camera, which is also a CyberShot. They're pretty awesome cameras.)

17 September, 2011 - Mom's Birthday

Our plans were to go to a little farm that we have south of our city for the day. There, they grow raspberries, black berries, pumpkins, and have several apple orchards. Sadly, they had no apples this year and their berries had been picked over pretty badly. However, we did managed to walk away with a basket of berries and spent a good bit of time doing photography. (Let's face it, getting me, LH, and CB together means an abundance of photos. It can't be helped.)

One of the very ripe berries that had escaped the notice of many other folks by hiding at the bottom of the bush.

Pumpkin!

Another pumpkin!

And because bombarding you all with insect shots seems to be my new thing...

An adorable little grasshopper that I found toward the beginning of the day. I like the way his little leg is reaching for the other leaf.

No clue what this beetle is, but these critters were positively covering several of the pumpkins. The effect was somewhat creepy, though positively fascinating. They were incredibly skittish, but I did manage to get a shot of one of them as it was facing me, rather than retreating. Anyone know what kind of beetle it is?

16 September, 2011

Make a photograph that conveys or illustrates a sense of music.

LH and I got back from a Campus Crusade meeting on Thursday 'round midnight. Since the fog was still thick and it was late, we had her stay with us overnight. So she went with us to the gym on the sixteenth and hung out with us that afternoon. Since my mom's birthday was the following day, she invited LH to stay the entire weekend.

I grabbed the penny whistle we acquired during the Irish Fest in July and took a few photos of it in the afternoon. Not quite sure if this captures "a sense of music," but I gave it my best shot.

15 September, 2011

Go old-school today and make a photograph that either features an old subject or simply looks old.

It rained about thirteen straight hours on the fourteenth and stayed ridiculously foggy on the fifteenth. So much moisture really is odd and had us all a bit muddled. For a couple days, Colorado felt more like Washington state.

I chose the below photo as my official shot of the day. I took the photo in the sepia color, but decided to add a border in GIMP just for the heck of it.

This is a non-artistic photo of the fog. 'Cos it was crazy thick and I wanted photos of the madness.

14 September, 2011

Make a photograph that features the color yellow in some way or another.

I find it amusing that this challenge came on a day that was as gray and dreary as they come. It literally rained all day (something unheard of for September in Colorado) causing everything to look rather... well, not yellow. So instead of attempting to venture outside and find myself a good shot, I used the floor lamp in my room. Looking at my photos on my camera screen, I thought these would be terrible shots with only a hint of yellow. My camera screen must have lied to me, though, for they turned out rather well and quite yellow.

13 September, 2011

Make a photograph with a photograph. Find a cherished print and compose it in a larger scene.

Wisdom was about four or five months old when I took the picture in the print with my mom's film camera. I've had said photo in the "I Love My Dog" magnetic frame that my mom got for me since a short while after I took the shot. As such, it's very worn and faded due to exposure to the Colorado sun.

I figured I'd take advantage of today's challenge to do a "baby photo" setup.

12 September, 2011

It was a busy enough day that both CoolBreeze and I forgot our daily photos until the sun had nearly vanished. As such, I recommended that we let our cameras do all the work for us today. And so we took them out back, set them on the ground, set the timers, clicked the shutter button and then dodged out of the way.

I edited the photo for color and composition a bit, but could only do so much. So instead of looking the red that it is, CB's camera looks hot pink in this photo. Weird.

11 September, 2011

When we stopped by the tunnel that starred on my blog on July 24th, my sisters decided we were going to do a photo shoot there at some point. As Boom got some new boots for her birthday last month, she decided she needed some photographs of her in said boots. When she told me that's what she wanted to do, I immediately pictured the below photo. Amazingly enough, said photo actually worked out.

Once we'd finished with that part of the shoot, I took some portrait shots of my sisters. Though I took color and black and white photos, I found the black and white turned out better (due to some funky coloring). Unfortunately, I also managed to get a good number of blurred pictures. Some of the shots that did turn out are being posted here for your viewing pleasure. As always, critique is welcome; I'm still working on my portrait skills.

10 September, 2011

A macro shot of ripened sunflower seeds.

While I was out getting shots of the sunflower seeds, I discovered the reason for our sunflowers prematurely and quite suddenly dying out a few weeks back. The answer is in the photo below: aphids! For those of you that don't know, I have a brief biology lesson for you. Ants farm aphids. Certain species of ants will maintain "herds" of aphids to collect and eat the honeydew that the aphids release. As such, the ants will guard and defend the aphids from predators.

I did not realize we had an aphid herd on one of the sunflowers I was attempting to photograph until I peeved off the aphid herding ants. In a matter of seconds, I had ten to twenty angry ants crawling up my arm, convinced my mission in life was to destroy their precious stock. Once I'd managed to rid myself of my attackers, I took a closer look at the goings on of the sunflowers. Sure enough, I spotted ants obsessively tending some little green pods. However, I couldn't get near enough to the sites of interest without being attacked by ants. I did managed to get some photos of the ants, though several ants attacked my camera while I was at it.

Before today, I knew ants farmed aphids, but I couldn't get close enough to see that that's what the green pods were. Thank goodness for photos, which enlarged the activity enough for me to glean what the heck was going on.

For those of you that find this as interesting as I did, you can view a larger size of the below photo here. For everyone else--my apologies. Ants fascinate me as much as bees. You may resume life now.

9 September, 2011

It was the end of the day, I was not feeling like doing photography but knew that I had to. As such, I grabbed my camera and headed outside, since I'd seen some handsome clouds earlier that day. Sadly, all of the good looking clouds were far off in the distance. My camera couldn't really handle it. Not my proudest moment. Ah well.

8 September, 2011

Make a photograph of a beautiful simple shape, such as an egg, today. Utilize lighting and focus to make it sing.

The knight has always been my favorite chess piece. Though I prefer the black knight, I liked the contrast on the white piece far better.

7 September, 2011

Make a photograph dominated by dark tones today.

The latest addition to Wisdom's bandanna collection. I loved the color of this bandanna, so I couldn't resist bringing it home. I intended to photograph the dog and the bandanna, but due to her feud with the neighboring dog, could not get the silly mutt to cooperate.

6 September, 2011

Make a photograph featuring a natural material.

Ran some errands, including a quick trip by Cracker Barrel to pick up applications. I do love Cracker Barrel's rocking chairs.

5 September, 2011 - Labor Day

Our grandparents invited us to their house for a Labor Day cookout a couple weeks back. While supper was being prepared and my presence wasn't required, I slipped out to their backyard and sought out some photo opportunities. From indoors, I didn't see any promising shoots, but photographic potential went up drastically once I was actually out and about.

First, I dropped by the grill, where the coals were being heated and looking rather photogenic while they were at it.

Next, I dropped by my grandmother's butterfly garden, to see how her plants are doing and noticed her blue fringe daisies are looking rather good this year.

I also paused to admire the very dead trees that are planted amongst the butterfly garden. Such bare branches are a rare sight even at the end of summer.
