30 July, 2011

Make a photograph featuring the color yellow today.

Initially, I intended to try to photograph my dog with a tennis ball for today's challenge; a plan that resulted in a long training session in our very hot backyard. During the training session, though, she learned a new trick. So, despite the lack of a picture, I call that a success.

Instead, I share with you a photo of the rubber duck I got signed by ETH earlier this month. My main reason for photographing this fellow is that it's yellow--I'm pretty sure the only Haggis Head following this blog was there with me when I got the duck signed.

I found it really hard to get a decent photo that displayed all five signatures. So here you have three (and a half).

29 July, 2011

We all have some sort of hobby or favorite activity. Make a photo that shows something you enjoy doing.

No, I've not run out of ways to capture spheres on camera. This right here is the four ball pyramid; a trick that I cannot successfully put into action. If I could, I'd be able to spin the balls, rather than just hold them. But I'm still working on mastering single ball, so multi ball work is a bit out of my league, as it were.

The focus of this shot-the black ball-happens to be one of my birthday gifts. I'm thrilled that Boom gave me a shiny new ball and am doing everything I can to keep it safe and sound, since I've deemed it my "performance ball".

(The top ball is CB's and the purple one in the background is my mom's. They were kind enough to lend their acrylics to me for this shoot.)

28 July, 2011

Weekly sunflower shot. In the past week, they've grown approximately two feet taller--the very height I felt they should be last Thursday. So they now have my permission to open their blooms.

27 July, 2011

Rotate your camera today a bit and make a slightly off-angle photograph. Use the angle to emphasize your subject.

It's the chain linked fence... again... It's very photogenic.

26 July, 2011

We took a somewhat spontaneous trip to Garden of the Gods today. I was in a mood for nature photography and rather wanted to try somewhere other than our favorite park; though it's served us well many a time, I felt some new scenery was in order.

This is a rather photo heavy post, so I apologize to anyone on slow connections.

(Also better viewed in a larger size.)

Another bee photo to add to my ever-growing collection. This one has a fun little story to go with it, though. As I was kneeling on the ground, snapping shot after shot of this adorable insect, a lady with a thick German accent asked me in somewhat broken English if the bee smiled for me. I rather liked that question and only wish I'd thought quick enough to inform her that, to me, a bee holding still long enough for me to photograph it is better than any smile it could give me.

25 July, 2011

Make a photograph conveying the feeling or thought of being hot.

Tight spaces, no air circulation, flames, and summer heat equal a very warm photographer. Folks certainly do crazy things in the name of art--and I'm definitely no exception.

24 July, 2011

Find something beautiful and make a photo. Don't over think it.

After church, LH and I went to Panera for lunch and a chance to just chill. While we were there, a ferocious storm tore through the area, leaving big ole puddles everywhere. We'd already planned on getting the rather droopy sunflowers watered in the afternoon, so the rain saved us some time.

We got to hang out the rest of the evening and then LH bade us farewell and headed home.

The above photo is the shot that I'm considering my official daily picture. The image below, however, is a photo that I took in the morning just before church. This really neat tunnel caught my eye a few months ago, so I was thrilled to finally play with it a bit.

23 July, 2011 - Renaissance Festival

We made our annual Renaissance Festival trip on Saturday, this time with one of CB's friends and LH in tow. On our way into the festival, we ran into some of our friends from CP, which was a fun and unexpected surprise.

Per usual, our first stop was the first joust of the day. I wasn't quite as determined to get action shots this time; instead, I opted for some more artistic shots. I didn't get many, but that's alright. There's always next year.

The following photos are in chronological order, since that seemed the most logical way to arrange them.

We sat on Sir James's side of the arena and cheered him on for the first round.

An adorable elephant. I got an abundance of photos of this fellow and still managed to pick only two shots to share with you all.

This handsome boy acted up throughout the entire of the last joust. The squire handling him nearly lost control of him several times due to his behavior. I'm thinking the sunburn 'round his eyes and on his nose probably had something to do with his misbehavior, though I very well might be wrong. When I snapped this shot, the squire was leading him back to the stalls mid-joust.

My parting shot of the day.

22 July, 2011

Lose the rectangle today. Make a photograph with a square (1:1) aspect ratio and post it. Crop if needed.

I was actually pretty psyched about this challenge. Unfortunately, I discovered that my camera cannot be set to shoot in 1:1 aspect ratio, so I had to shoot in rectangle with a square frame in mind. Interesting challenge. Although I have cropped my photos to a square frame in the past, I have never taken photos with the aforementioned framing in mind. This is something I'm going to have to play with a little more in the future.

21 July, 2011

Make a photograph featuring nature in some fashion.

Though the sunflowers around the lamppost are looking far better than those in our corner garden, all of them have developed heads. They're a bit smaller than they ought to be, but I'm attributing this to the late planting.

20 July, 2011

Make a photograph today that features the use of low contrast.

Taken at the gym. Of a low contrast setup.

19 July, 2011

Stairs and ramps lead the eye and take us places. Make a photo of a stair or ramp that you see today.

Long day. Did a fair bit of cleaning and ran some errands. I did remember to get outside and do the daily challenge, though.

18 July, 2011

Make a photograph today of something that you've not made a photograph of before.

A very flashy plaque that the Y has in their lobby; complete with their motto, "Spirit, Mind, Body" and a Bible verse.

John 17:20, 21
"My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me."

17 July, 2011

Myself, my sisters, my mom, and LH spent our afternoon at our favorite park.

An experimental angle of a tree.

Duck.

16 July, 2011

Make a photo of something that sparkles in some way.

So, funny story... For some reason, my brain recalled today's challenge as "something shiny." Thus, after spending most of my afternoon cleaning my room, I wound up photographing something shiny. We're just going to pretend that I met the challenge, eh? After all, they say it's the thought that counts.

These two are the GG Valentine and Heartbreaker models from Breyer. They are the glossy version, which makes them shinier (but not necessarily more sparkly) than a regular finish model.

(The foal is Heartbreaker and the mare GG Valentine.)

15 July, 2011

My Ice Plant has developed more buds! I thought it had passed out of season already (which seemed a bit early), but appear to have been wrong.

14 July, 2011

The planter sunflowers aren't nearly as large as the lamppost flowers, but they're still looking pretty good. I look forward to them developing heads!

13 July, 2011

Pay attention to your surroundings today. Make a photo of something you walk by every day without noticing.

I have practically no musical talent. I can play a few tunes on the Psaltery, but that's about the extent of my musical prowess.

Because my grandma spent some time living in Hawaii, she has a bit of a thing for Ukuleles. As such, when she found a company that sold Ukuleles in three different colors, she felt compelled to get one each for my sisters and I.

Refer to paragraph one.

Basically, I've no clue how to play a Ukulele and don't know anyone that could give me a hand, so the aforementioned instrument has pretty much just sat around in my room since Christmas. But hey, it looks good in front of a camera!

12 July, 2011

We took another spontaneous trip to our favorite park. This time, we spent most of our time contact juggling on one of the grassy areas, though we did make a trip to the fountain before we left the park.

11 July, 2011

Change your angle today. Make a photo from ground level.

LH took me home and hung out at our place for the duration of the afternoon. I didn't get around to taking my photograph until we were at home and it just so happens I picked the same subject as my sister did. That's just how uninteresting our yard is right now.

10 July, 2011 - Irish Fest (Day Two)

Make a photo that features stripes of some sort today.

LH and I parted ways with my family after the previous night's concert and headed to her parents' apartment where we crashed for the night. We spent the morning contact juggling, chatting, and touring the building, after which we grabbed some lunch and took off for the Fest again.

The interior of the apartment building was incredibly artsy. I took this shot as a way to fulfill the "stripes" challenge in the case that I couldn't get a photo at the Festival.

We spent some time wandering the grounds before heading over to the stage. When the previous concert had ended, we snagged some spots in front of the stage and passed the time with some more juggling. About half an hour before the show was due to start, one of the torrential downpours that are infamous for messing with the festival cropped up. So we retreated to a tent and waited out the storm.

The rain is a little more visible in a larger version.

Despite being half an hour behind, the Festival let the band play their full set, so we still got to enjoy the concert. Since this was a day concert, as opposed to the night concert of the previous day, I was actually able to get some photos of the band. (All of the following photos are shamelessly edited, since my only goal was to get clear shots.)

ETH's Brian Buchanan, the world's greatest fiddler, in my opinion.

Trevor Lewington, whose amazing vocals, guitar work, and awesome songwriting skills make him my favorite part of ETH. (Yes, I did have to do some shooting in B&W. It's a habit.)

The aforementioned band members playing together. The other three members managed to evade the camera very well--at least, where single shots were concerned.

9 July, 2011 - Irish Fest (Day One)

Create a photograph that makes you happy today.

For the first time since 2009, I made it to the Colorado Irish Festival. I had the privilege of attending the Fest with my mom, sisters and adopted sister, LH. We had a great time and enjoyed an Enter the Haggis concert in the evening.

Unfortunately, as the concert was at night, none of my photographs of the band turned out, but I did get a photo of the Welsh flag earlier in the day. (Yes, a Welsh flag. Not an Irish flag. But I really liked the way the shot turned out.)

8 July, 2011

Make a photo of a tool today. Screwdriver. Pliers. Computer. What's the tool you find most important on a daily basis?

I don't know about "most important," but I can say that my Swiss Army knife is a tool I make sure to have on me daily. I've had this knife for 'round about eight years now. Its toothpick is stuck and it doesn't open as smoothly as it once did, but there's something to be said for always having a combination knife and set of screwdrivers on your person.

7 July, 2011

They're getting taller!

A shot of some of the damage from the previous day's hail storm. Sunflowers are hardy creatures.

6 July, 2011

Colorado has crazy weather. It's part of the reason I love this state so!

5 July, 2011

Pattern is built on repetition, like a rhythm. Make a photo of a regular or irregular pattern.

As it's nearly a week later (and I'm just finally posting), I can't honestly say that I remember Tuesday with much clarity. I do recall having a good time getting the motion blur on this photo just right, though. (This is a pinwheel decoration that we had out in our front yard for the Fourth.)

Tuesday, July 05, 2011

4 July, 2011 - Independence Day

Make a photo with a strong linear composition today.

Happy Fourth of July!

For inquiring minds: that's Pike's Peak in the background.

3 July, 2011

We had a really busy day with church, a concert, spending time at my grandparents' on top of having LH hang with us all day, so I didn't get around to photography until some last minute searching of my grandparents' front yard for a photo opportunity at eight-thirty in the evening.

Strangely enough, I couldn't decide on one photo for Sunday, so here are my two favorites.

2 July, 2011

Feature a plant in a photograph today. Domestic, wild, or anything in between is fair game.

Because I'm sure you all really needed me to post another plant photo...

My poor ice plant is already out of season, it would seem. Its last blooms have died and been removed. So now it's just a green, tentacle-y plant.
