30 June, 2011

Got the kitchen nice and clean today. Per usual, my dog did everything she could to help out...

...It just so happens all she can do to assist me is lay around on the tile floor looking really sweet. Although, if that box of water bottles had decided to go anywhere, she definitely would have let me know.

29 June, 2011

Illustrate choice in a photograph today. Be obvious or subtle. Your, ahem, choice.

Pick a card. Any card.

To be honest, this was another of those last minute "Oh no, I forgot to take a photo!" instances. The sun was hidden behind a heavy layer of clouds by the time I recalled that I needed my daily picture, so I had to go lamp crazy to get enough lighting on this one to get it at least semi-clear. Unfortunately despite all of the lightbulbs pointed at my studio (a.k.a. my bed), I still had to use black and white to hide the hideous color. Yeeeah. Not a particularly good shoot. Hopefully I can redo this idea sometime--with better lighting, preferably.

28 June, 2011

Make a photograph that features white in a dominant manner. Use a white subject. Blow out the sky. Use your imagination.

I spotted this pretty little white flower outside the house that my mom and I dropped my sisters at for a surprise party. (The party being for a friend--not for them.)

27 June, 2011

Make a photograph with around the number three today. Three objects. Three colors. The number three.

I'd never noticed it before but most things seem to come in products of twos. At least, they do in our yard. Which was the most convenient place to look for a subject this afternoon when I finally remembered to check the Daily Shoot assignment.

Out of desperation (or a stroke of genius?), I decided to photograph our "beware of dog" sign. Three words on the sign. Three prongs on the "E". Three letters in "dog". Three colors, as LH pointed out to me (brown, red, white). Three galore!

26 June, 2011

Make a monochrome photograph today. Keep in mind that monochrome doesn’t have to mean black and white.

Just because "monochrome" doesn't have to mean black and white doesn't mean that I didn't look for a black and white photo op. I took several B&W photos, but none had the natural contrast that I prefer in my grayscale photos. So instead, I give you a photo of our fence.

25 June, 2011

I actually had no intention of doing black and white two days in a row, but I was working indoors and felt too lazy to bother setting up lighting that would agree with my camera. This idea was actually random. I found a box of fortune cookies in our cupboard and decided to play with one as a subject. This fortune is so very typical, but definitely works in a cliché sort of way. (The best fortune I've ever found in one of these cookies said, "If you tempt a squirrel with a nut, prepare to be bitten.")

24 June, 2011

LH hung around with us for the morning and went with us to the gym, after which we went out to a late lunch at Sonic. It was a rather warm day, but not so warm as to make eating outdoors unpleasant.

23 June, 2011

LH needed an archer model and I needed someone with more computer expertise than myself: this led to us planning for her to drive up here and spend the day at our house. Though the archery went relatively quickly, the computer stuff took literally all afternoon. As nine o'clock (PM) rolled around, my mother proposed that LH stay the night so that she didn't have to make the long drive home late at night.

Our little mammoths are getting bigger and bigger. In fact, the leaves are starting to get a bit heavy for their stalks--let's hope the stalks thicken up soon.

22 June, 2011

Make a photo of a pair of subjects today. People or inanimate objects are both fair game!

My sisters and I have a thing about masks... I blame TFK.

This pair can be found on CoolBreeze's bedroom wall. Apparently the complementary colors were accidental.

21 June, 2011

Make a photograph of water in one form or another today.

Water... We've been here a few times now. Sometimes it's doable and sometimes it isn't. Fortunately, we decided to take a spontaneous trip to our favorite park for the fun of it and so that I could make an attempt at getting some decent photos. So, without further ado, I give you the products of our venture:

This scene actually looks better larger, when you can see the young ladies sitting by the lake far better.

I rarely frame subjects this way because I'm not real fond of the blurring in the forefront of the image. I kinda like the way this one turned out, though.

Look! Water!

Even more water! (And some moss.)

I couldn't resist trying my hand at a bit of portrait photography, since our location was fabulous for such things. These two shots turned out the best, I thought. (And so did LH.) Critique is welcomed from any of you experienced with photographing people. *pointed look at Mylla*

So there you are--water!

20 June, 2011

The day started wonderfully cool and cloudly--a much appreciated break from the premature hot weather. The sky cleared nicely in the afternoon, making for pretty blue skies and comfortable temperatures. I took advantage of the nice afternoon by calling my Floridan friend and chatting with him whilst wandering the back yard. In fact, this shot was taken one handed while I was chatting with him. Casual photography for the win.

19 June, 2011

Lists guide an eye in a linear way: menus, recipes, etc. As you're out and about today, find a list and make a photo.

For Father's Day dinner, my mother volunteered to make manicotti for our family and my grandparents. Per usual, I assisted her with the preparation of the dish. The worn, stained recipe card that we utilized met the daily challenge beautifully.

18 June, 2011

Make a close-up photograph of something. Fill the frame with your subject if you can.

So, I realized a few days before that I haven't posted any pictures of my dog since the beginning of May. I've taken several, but none of them have made the cut, as it were. I figured it would be fun to try to get my dog to cooperate with closeups, so I nabbed her, took her out back--treats in hand--and proceeded to get some shots of her. Surprisingly, I got several good pictures from our little photo shoot. In fact, I had a hard time deciding on just two to post.

17 June, 2011

I must admit that I got a laugh out of the timing of today's assignment; today was the first day since the beginning of May that we had overcast skies and rainshowers on and off all day. Admittedly, I could have worked with artificial lighting, but you all know how my camera feels about than and frankly, I much prefer using sunlight in my shadows pics.

The scattered showers coated the gym's windows with sheets of water, revealing the world outside in rippling images. During my cool down, I grabbed my camera and tried to capture the parking lot through the water... and got distracted with a piece of hail that made a brief appearance on the ledge. Unfortunately, I only got one shot of it, as my camera seemed opposed to focusing on a rapidly melting subject.

16 June, 2011

The color of the day is orange. Make a photograph that is full of orange today.

My sister's new plant: a poppy. An orange one, none the less.

The weekly sunflower update: (without wet soil this time, since certain people didn't seem to appreciate the "slimy" look. ;) )

15 June, 2011

The farmer's market that we visited every Wednesday last summer is back this year. This is the first time we've actually made it--and we did so just barely. Most of the booths were being packed up by the time we pulled into the parking lot. The folks selling produce seemed to be holding out a little bit longer than the rest of the vendors, though, so we were able to take a look at the fruits and veggies for sale.

I though the texture on this ear of corn was rather neat--especially in black and white.

An ant on one of our dwarf columbines. I liked the contrast of the black ant against the pale pink flower.

14 June, 2011

I love photographing insects. I really do. Especially bees! When one starts paying attention to the bees buzzing around one's neighborhood, they quickly start to pick up on the many different types. I've seen four different types in our yard alone this year.

This lovely critter was buzzing around a plant nursery that we visited. I actually spent a good portion of our duration at the nursery seeking bees out and trying to capture their images. I finally found one bee so enamored with its flowers that it didn't mind me getting close enough to snap some photos.

13 June, 2011

Make another beautiful shot today, but pick a subject that’s completely different than yesterday’s.

After spending a few minutes wandering the house, muttering "photo, photo, photo, photo...", I managed to settle on a subject for this challenge.

I consider this beauty for a couple different reasons: the first being that the written word is really a gorgeous thing to photograph. Never gets old. (Except, maybe, to the viewer.) The second reason being the death of my Savior, which, though gruesome, led to the more important resurrection of the same. The life of Christ grants my fellow Christians and I eternal life--all of this made possible by God's vast and never ending love. It doesn't get more beautiful than that.

12 June, 2011

Don’t over-think it. Make a beautiful photograph today. And tomorrow. Keep at it and discover your own view of beauty.

The Psaltery really is an amazing instrument; both beautiful to look at and beautiful to listen to.

11 June, 2011

I'll be honest, this photo was a last minute sort of thing. I needed a daily shot, so I snapped a picture of one of the lovely buds on my mom's rose bush.

10 June, 2011

Parallel lines draw the eye. Make a photograph with parallel lines today.

When I read this challenge, I actually decided I wanted to do something with the rails circling the gym at the track. Unfortunately, it was a very busy day at the gym, so I chose to forgo that plan. It was as we were watering our plants in the evening that I spotted this opportunity on a portion of our aged fence.

9 June, 2011

So last year, I posted photos of our sunflowers on Monday. It so happens that we sowed our seeds on a Thursday this year, so that will be my day for sunflower updates.

Here we are, a week after getting the seeds in the ground and we already have an abundance of healthy looking sprouts! These particular seedlings are actually some of the Lemon Queens that we planted, rather than the Mammoths. In a few weeks, we'll thin the sunflowers out by removing some of the smaller, weaker seedlings to allow the healthier ones to grow. For now, they will be permitted to grow very near one another.

One of the banners that sports character traits in the circuit room at the Y.

7 June, 2011

This photo looked a heckuva lot better on the camera screen than it does in a larger size. Unfortunately, I only got two shots of this display of flip flops, since patrons needed to go to and fro. I guess they can't all be winners.

6 June, 2011

This being June, I like to change whatever Wisdom's current collar is to her patriotic collar. As it is, her general, day-to-day collar is currently the leather collar that I got her last July. This thing has been rather durable--especially considering its relatively cheap price. So now she is sporting her red, white, and blue collar and this one is taking a bit of a hiatus.

5 June, 2011

Make a photograph from an unusual point of view.

I briefly considered ignoring the daily challenge and photographing the pretty roses growing on my mom's rose bush, but decided against it for the sake of you all. I mean, surely you would far prefer look at a picture of the underside of our deck, right?

4 June, 2011

So, if you all are not already tired of flower photos, I suspect you will be a month from now. I quite enjoy flower photography and happen to be up to my knees in new flora to shoot right now, so I'm going wild. Don't worry, this ought to simmer down at least somewhat in the near future.

These amazing flowers are of the Ice Plant family, which happens to be a succulent I've worked with before. This is of a different variety than the plants I've grown in the past, but I suspect I'll have just as much success with it as the others.

3 June, 2011

My mother and I hit our favorite flower shop to pick up a few new plants to fill some of our recently emptied planters. We didn't get many, as we're going to have to haul water from the house in watering cans to keep our flora nice and green this summer. (The spigot's still not fixed and I highly doubt the landlord will see to that anytime soon.)

While browsing the flower selection, my mom ran across this lady bug crawling about in one of the pots. I subjected it to a little photo shoot (the poor thing was not happy with me) before moving onto other plants.

This was a really neat flower that we found among the shop's inventory. I noted what it was called, but promptly forgot as I read tag after tag. I thought the bloom looked like something you'd find in a Dr. Seuss story. (I cropped this one up, since there was a rather unavoidable red flower that popped up in all of the photos I got of this flower. Very distracting.)

2 June, 2011 - Sunflower Planting

Illustrate symmetry in a photograph today.

We finally sowed our sunflower seeds this afternoon. So now those little plants are on their way to growing up big and strong. (At least, that's my hope. We're planting them a bit late, so they probably aren't likely to get as big as they could.)

While we were out of doors, we cleaned up the front yard a fair bit and threw out a bunch of the plants that just couldn't survive the winter (or the landlord imposed drought.)

It just so happens that my sister's Johnny Jump-Ups decided to defy all laws of planters (surprise, surprise) and have picked the cracks of the concrete to grow out of. They really are absolutely adorable, sprouting up wherever the seed landed, so we're leaving them be. I had a good time getting some photos of the boldly colored flowers this afternoon.

For the photography purists out there--one unedited shot.

A heavily edited image, for the fun of it.

1 June, 2011

Make a photograph of a symbol today.

I actually wanted to get a shot of the Y logo, since Wednesday is one of our gym days, but found myself faced with a very occupied basketball court--which is where the logo is displayed. So I instead settled for the handicap symbol outside the front doors of the Y.
